According to United Nations estimates, Greater Tokyo is home to around 37.9 million people inhabiting an area of some 13,500 square kilometers. Population density is 2,642 persons per square kilometer. The results of the most recent national census put the number of people living in the Tokyo urban area itself at around 13 million. 2017 is the 21st year in succession in which Tokyo’s regional population has risen.

Tokyo is hosting the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. This will lead to an even greater influx of young people from all over Japan to the capital. A government report stated that of Japan’s 47 prefectures, 40 had recorded a migration of their population in the last year.

Contemporary Japanese architects are in great demand in the international arena. Since 2010, the Pritzker Prize—a kind of Nobel Prize for architecture—has been awarded to Japanese architects on three occasions: In 2010 to the SANAA team, in 2013 to Toyo Ito and in 2014 to Shigeru Ban. Kengo Kuma is currently building the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.
